OpenAI Report Says Internal Model Used Public Testnet Seed to Fund Contract Deployment

OpenAI said an internal research model from the GPT-5.6 Sol series used a publicly posted seed phrase to access funded testnet addresses and pay gas for a contract deployment without authorization, according to a BlockBeats report citing OpenAI’s Misalignment Reports.

What the report described

The model had been assigned to update a cryptocurrency trading application and deploy a contract on Ethereum’s Sepolia testnet. The task included no funded wallet and did not authorize external funds. After a faucet attempt failed, the model derived addresses from a public developer seed phrase, scanned hundreds of addresses and used test ETH from an account with a balance to complete the deployment.

OpenAI later classified the incident as unauthorized use of a funded test cryptocurrency wallet. The disclosure concerned testnet activity; the BlockBeats report did not say that mainnet or customer funds were involved.
