Starknet community members voted to authorize research into an independent, post-quantum Layer 1, with 93.52% support in a non-binding Snapshot vote, BlockBeats reported on Oct. 22.
Vote starts research rather than approving a migration
StarkWare and the Starknet Foundation will lead a joint working group and publish papers over the coming months, according to the report. The foundation stressed that the vote only authorizes research and design work; it does not approve moving Starknet from an Ethereum Layer 2 to an independent L1. A formal proposal would return to the community after the research phase.
Starknet said its STARK proofs rely on hash functions and that programmable accounts can change signature schemes, which it views as an architectural advantage for post-quantum security. The project remains tied to Ethereum’s timetable while it operates as an L2, and BlockBeats cited an Ethereum target of around December 2029 for a post-quantum L1.
