SEC tokenization exemption sparks debate over eligible blockchains

Industry groups are pressing the US Securities and Exchange Commission to clarify which blockchains qualify for its tokenized-securities trading exemption, according to an October 24 report from BlockBeats.

Network control divides views

The Solana Policy Institute called for a tighter definition of permissionless networks, focusing on who can validate or block transactions and change network rules. Hedera argued that restricting validation to approved entities should not, by itself, disqualify a network.

The report said SIFMA also sought clarity on eligible blockchains and questioned whether stock tokenization should require explicit issuer consent. Better Markets urged the SEC to withdraw the exemption and pursue formal rulemaking.
