Korean Retail Investors Lose 6.313 Trillion Won on Single-Stock ETPs

Retail accounts trading Korean single-stock exchange-traded products, including ETNs, recorded 6.313 trillion won in losses from May 27 through Aug. 14, according to data reported by Yonhap and cited by BlockBeats.

Losses by age and account type

The total comprised 2.3242 trillion won in realized losses and 3.9888 trillion won in position valuation losses across accounts at 10 securities firms. Investors in their 40s had the largest aggregate loss at 2.053 trillion won across about 165,200 accounts. Investors aged 70 and older averaged 29.94 million won in losses.

Reported changes through Aug. 14

From late July to Aug. 14, realized losses rose 360.4 billion won while valuation losses fell 50.7 billion won, expanding total losses by 309.7 billion won. The report said selling may have contributed, but price moves and new trades also affect the figures; the data alone cannot establish the reason for sales or whether forced liquidation occurred.
