About 7,900 Korean investors with more than 3 billion won in financial assets sold Samsung Electronics and SK hynix shares between October 1 and 20, according to a BlockBeats report.

Direct shares to leveraged funds

Net sales totaled 5.59 billion won for Samsung Electronics and 9.24 billion won for SK hynix, or 14.83 billion won combined, about $11.2 million. During the same period, investors made net purchases of 33.2 billion won in the KODEX Semiconductor Leveraged ETF, 22.5 billion won in the KODEX Leveraged ETF and 10.5 billion won in KODEX 200.

The report said a twice-leveraged inverse ETF tracking the KOSPI 200 saw 8 billion won of net selling. Leveraged funds reset daily and can magnify losses when markets are volatile.
